AIR is integrating Elmo's Gold HV servo drives to power eight electric propulsion motors in its 120D cargo drone. The drives' high power density enables air-cooled operation, removing the need for liquid cooling loops and cutting system weight and complexity.
The AIR 120D is a Group 4 UAS with 550 lb payload capacity and 1-hour endurance. It targets mid-mile delivery, maritime resupply, and humanitarian aid — markets where payload-to-weight ratio determines mission economics. Over 25 units have been ordered to date.
By eliminating liquid cooling, AIR gains additional useful payload without redesigning the airframe. CEO Rani Plaut described the partnership as strategic rather than transactional, with potential for deeper integration as the platform matures. Integration is underway with validation testing in progress.
The dual-use architecture positions the 120D for both commercial and defense customers. The propulsion simplification could reduce field maintenance complexity — a critical factor for operators in austere environments or high-tempo commercial operations.
